(CHICAGO, IL – July 16, 2012) – Illinois native and Phoenix Sun’s phenom Shannon Brown presents the 2nd Annual Wood-Star Music Festival, Friday, August 17th – Sunday, August 19th. The Wood-Star Music Festival is filled with a variety of activities including: a private invite-only V.I.P. reception, parties, a free basketball clinic, concerts and a celebrity basketball game.
“I created this event as a way to give back to the community. This annual event will raise funds to provide scholarships to underprivileged youth in Chicago and in my hometown of Maywood,” said Shannon Brown. Wood-Star Music Festival will attract attendees from across the country and will become an annual destination event for the City of Chicago.
The Wood-Star Music Festival will kick-off with a V.I.P. invite-only private reception sponsored by Hennessey VS which will include a special performance by soulful R&B newcomer Luke James.
The festival includes two concerts that will be held in Union Park, located in the West Loop. The “Soul in the City” concert will feature national chart topping artists: Dawn Richard, formerly of pop group Dirty Money, Estelle, Shannon Brown’s wife R&B superstar Monica and Robin Thicke.
The weekend will conclude with an ‘old skool’ Block party entitled “Kangols and 8 ball Jackets” featuring Rakim, MC Lyte, Naughty by Nature, Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh.
The Old Skool concert is slated to be the country’s biggest retro party complete with break dancers, graffiti artists and attendees pulling out their 90’s attire. VH1’s Janell Snowden and MTV’s Sway Calloway will host the concerts.
Wood-Star Music Festival includes a celebrity basketball game with Shannon Brown serving as a team coach. The game will include a half-time performance by popular teen group TK N Cash. The celebrity basketball game will be held at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Campus.
In addition, the Wood-Star Music Festival will provide new artists with a chance to open at the festival concerts with the “Dream Big” contest. Performers can upload videos to the Wood-Star Music Festival Facebook page as well as tweet videos to @woodstarfest. Entries must be received by July 15th for consideration. Winners will be announced on August 1, 2012. Three winners will be selected.
